Crystal Engineering: Form Meets Function

This event is the third GRC dedicated to crystal engineering following on from highly successful meetings in 2010 and 2012, each of which was attended by over 150 international participants. This GRC will be accompanied by an exciting Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) titled "Mechanochemistry and Solid-state Reactivity: State of the Art" in which only students and postdocs will present or lead discussions. The GRC and the GRS will together provide a unique opportunity for participants to discuss and debate the very latest trends and findings within this highly interdisciplinary and rapidly evolving area of science.
Practical crystal engineering typically utilizes a bottom-up approach towards the assembly and construction of large architectures with well-defined chemical compositions, topologies and dimensions. The building blocks themselves can be any discrete chemical entity such as neutral organic molecules, ionic species or coordination complexes. The deliberate and directed assembly of these entities into larger structures is achieved with the aid of a wide variety of non-covalent interactions including (but not limited to) hydrogen- and halogen bonds, and coordination bonds. Crystal engineering is moving rapidly towards the design, synthesis and characterization of functional materials, but the area is not just about finding quick routes to new solids that offer smarter, faster and cheaper materials. Equally important is the task of seeking a better understanding of how fundamental laws of physics manifest themselves in ordered crystalline materials.
Progress in this area will take place at the confluence of organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry and requires a unique interface of experimental and theoretical tools and data provided by academics and industrialists alike. The purpose of these two meetings is to bring together a wide range of experts with a diverse background and will consist of the following session topics:

Summary
The conference programme is designed for biochemists, molecular and structural biologists who are interested in molecular machines. It should provide an overview of how structural biology, and more generally biophysical techniques can be applied to different biological problems. The techniques covered in the programme include classical high resolution structural biology techniques such as electron microscopy, crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, as well as fluorescence, mass spectrometry, small angle scattering and chemical biology.ÂAims
The aim of the conference is to show the interdisciplinary nature of the diverse experimental approaches and promote a modern way of thinking, where barriers between specific expertises are crossed. The sessions are organised according to the biological questions, ranging from gene expression to cell division. The primary purpose of CMS is to stimulate research in all aspects of clay science and technology and to widely disseminate the research findings. Through its conferences and publications, the society offers individuals a means of following the multi-directional growth of the clay sciences and of meeting fellow scientists with widely different backgrounds and interests.
This year's annual meeting will have sixteen technical sessions, a one-day workshop on "Surface modification of clays and nanocomposites", a one-day field trip to clay and lignite mines to learn the mineralogy and geochemical processes in the mines, associated environmental problems, and mine reclamation operations. A half-day local soil tour will follow the meeting. The CMS awards to be presented by the Society include the Marilyn and Sturges W. Bailey Award, the George W. Brindley Lecture, the Marion L. and Chrystie M. Jackson Mid-Career Clay Scientist Award, and the Pioneer in Clay Science Award. The winners of the 7th (2014) Reynolds Cup competition will be announced at the meeting. Awards will also be presented for student research and travel grants, student papers and posters.

The preservation and conservation of our cultural heritage is a significant contemporary worldwide concern. Advanced scientific methods and techniques are essential for the identification of materials present in historic objects of cultural heritage and processes occurring therein. These methods can also help to give a deeper understanding of the technology and craftsmanship of old masters. Modern analytic methods are important in studies of authenticity and can be applied as diagnostic techniques in practical conservation.Â
The aim of the conference is to promote the development and use of X-ray and other modern techniques in order to extract information from objects of cultural heritage. The conference is also a forum to bring together scientists whose major expertise is in a high-tech field and museum professionals (art historians, conservators and curators) whose particular responsibility is the organization and preservation of collections, and to disseminate the newest results in the area of scientific investigation of art objects.

QENS2014 aims to highlight topical scientific activities in the investigation of the dynamics of matter using quasi-elastic neutron scattering and to envision new applications. For neutron users it is the ideal showcase for their research. Newcomers will get a good overview over the scientific potential via contact with experts in the field. The conference program will take account of the increasing need for computer simulation and for theory support in data interpretation and will place QENS in the context of complementary techniques.ÂQENS science covers a wide area, from fundamental questions to relevant societal challenges, ranging from life sciences or future energy sources. WINS 2014
The aim of the workshop is to overview recent developments, forthcoming projects and practice of inelastic & quasi-elastic neutron spectrometers. Related issues such as development of data analysis software, auxiliary devices and outlook for future scientific efforts will be also of concern. We’ll put a particular focus on comparison of dynamics in single crystals investigated using TAS and T-o-F.ÂThe themes for presentations will include:
- Neutron spectrometers: design and simulations, novel ideas
- Devices and auxiliary equipment: polarization, magnetic field, pressure

Meeting Summary
G protein-coupled receptors are essential for intercellular communication in multicellular organisms and they are also the targets for many drugs already in use or under development, for the treatment of, for example, cardiovascular disease, asthma, cancer, neurological dysfunction and metabolic disorders. The field of GPCR biology has undergone a radical transformation with the structure determination of over 15 different GPCRs, including the first complex of an activated GPCR bound to a heterotrimeric G protein. This wealth of structural detail is now being translated into both a deeper understanding of GPCR function and into the development of new therapeutics. Structure is, however, only capable of defining atomic details of particular conformational states of a receptor. This meeting will focus on how an integration of structural data and information from experiments that study molecular dynamics in vitro, in vivo and in silico can be integrated to form an in-depth view of GPCR function. In addition, key therapeutic areas of cancer, inflammation and disorders of the central nervous system will be highlighted in relation to the development of novel therapeutics targeting GPCRs.

Studying Kinetics with Neutrons
March, 24-27, Grenoble, FranceThe study of kinetic processes is a growing field in modern science extending from physicsvia chemistry to biology. Neutrons are known to be extremely versatile probes for the investigation of structure and dynamics in condensed matter. The advent of new high intensity neutron sources and instruments, as well as the development of new real-time techniques, allows for the tracking of transformation processes in condensed matter on a microscopic scale. The evolution of structural details can be studied by time-resolved neutron scattering over a broad range of times. For example, new stroboscopic methods such as TISANE allow dynamic processes to be studied on a time scale extended to microseconds.Â
The scope of this third SKIN symposium is to bring together scientists from different fields of physics, chemistry, biology, materials and geo-sciences with neutron experts. The meeting will be focussed on results, new applications and future prospects for time-resolved neutron Small Angle Neutron Scattering and Neutron Reflectometry. It is an important aspect of the meeting to see what other experimental techniques achieve in this field and where theoreticians see future challenges.
