Sagamore is a prestigious conference that has been held triennially since 1964 under the auspices of the IUCr Commission on Quantum Crystallography (formerly the Charge, Spin, and Momentum Densities).

The Sagamore conferences have traditionally concerned interchange between researchers interested in property densities or distributions of materials such as the electron distribution, spin distribution, nuclear particle distribution, and electrostatic potential studied by the most accurate theoretical methods, and using the most advanced experimental techniques. There has been a focus on diffraction and scattering methods, and reconciling differences between the different methodologies.

The field has undergone rapid change in the last decade, with the term “Quantum Crystallography” being used to emphasize wave function based modelling methods. At the same time, both the quantity and precision of data have also increased due to advances in detector technology. There is a race to make the data from these methods available to general chemists, and to reveal new physical and chemical insights that may be exploited.

For the first time, the Sagamore conference will be held in India on the beautiful grounds of Shiv Nadar Institution of Eminence, one of the 12 Institutions of Eminence designated by the Government of India. A tour of the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is also included in the program.

The ACA Summer Course in Chemical Crystallography is a program that is now into its third decade of instruction here in the United States. The current incarnation of the course is directed towards Single-Crystal Chemical Crystallography and Powder Diffraction techniques, as applicable to small molecule studies. The course is designed to instruct attendees in the theory and practice of these two aspects of crystallography.

No prior knowledge of crystallography is expected from attendees. However, a good understanding of undergraduate level chemistry, physics and mathematics is desirable. While the course is geared towards graduate level attendees, applications from strong undergraduate students will be considered. Â Past course attendees have included faculty members and industrial researchers.

Workshop topics will include

• Fragment screening method development at both synchrotrons and laboratory-based screening facilities
• Application results presented by eminent scientists in the field will be accompanied by computer-based demonstrations in order to familiarize the audience the growing arsenal of new methods.
• Ability for students to present their results/issues to the workshop

The discovery of quasicrystals, over four decades ago, put an end to the age-old crystallographic paradigm that long-range order is synonymous with periodicity. It opened a new challenging research field, which is still pursued by an active and interdisciplinary scientific community worldwide. Great progress has been made, particularly in recent years, in understanding the mathematics, geometry, and physical behavior of quasicrystals, while the ever-growing list of diverse experimental systems, exhibiting aperiodic long-range order, keeps posing new and challenging questions and puzzles. Each year, the Argentine Society of Biophysics (SAB) organizes a meeting where the biophysical community of Argentina discusses the recent advances in all fields of biophysics. In the present meeting we will have a panel of international experts that are leaders in their respective fields, who will provide an update on the latest discoveries and discuss state-of-the-art approaches in biophysics to address experimentally challenging questions related to biological systems (in solution, in membranes, in cellulo and in vivo).

Attendance is not restricted to Argentinian citizens. SAB meetings always welcome students and researchers from other Latin American countries. SAB grants fee waivers and travel grants to local members of the Society, from the graduate student to the early career researcher levels, to enable their participation regardless of their access to funding. For the current meeting we plan to fund the participation of graduate students and postdocs from other South American countries as well.

The topics to be presented/discussed in this edition include protein interactions, computational and theoretical biophysics, membrane biophysics, structural biology, in situ biophysical methods, systems biology, synthetic biology, spectroscopy, epigenetics and control of gene expression, photophysics and photophysiology, protein aggregation and disease, and molecular interactions. The meeting will be an extraordinary opportunity for local scientists and PhD candidates to engage in scientific discussion with world renowned experts. We are confident that, given the communication skills of the speakers, the plenary lectures and symposiums will lead to fruitful discussions that will extend to the poster sessions. These discussions might allow younger researchers to apply new methodologies in their research projects and we hope they can lead to new collaborations.
