Raw diffraction data reuse: the good, the bad and the challenging

A major effort of the IUCr Diffraction Data Deposition Working Group (2011 to 2017) and now the IUCr Committee on Data since 2017 has been exploring the practicalities, the costs and benefits, and the opportunities for new crystallographic science arising from large-capacity data archives that have become available.  We think it timely to hold a full-day workshop aimed at: (1) discussing current practices in raw data archival and sharing, (2) educating those who generate and deal in crystallographic data on best practices in data reuse in various categories of crystallographic science by leading experts, (3) offering a summing up, including the role of IUCrData’s new Raw Data Letters. We expect attendees to learn about the opportunities for raw data reuse, including the use of raw data as test data sets for machine learning, and to achieve an understanding of how to effectively archive their own raw data to maximise the potential for data sharing and reuse in the future. This workshop will explore in detail the successes and challenges in practice of raw data sharing and reuse. Being a full day, it will complement the proposed microsymposium on "Raw diffraction data reuse: warts and all" in the Congress itself; most importantly the microsymposium will allow for the usual submission of up to four abstracts from anywhere in the world whereas the workshop is principally made up of invited speakers. Furthermore, the microsymposium will highlight the importance of databases. Of the workshop and the microsymposium the proposed keynote on the "European Photon and Neutron Open Science Cloud" (by Andy Götz of ESRF) is the major highlight, making it the world leading effort of this consortium of more than ten European synchrotron and X-ray laser radiation sources with raw data management and sharing.

7th International Conference of the Bangladesh Crystallographic Association

The conference will also promote the interest and understanding of crystallography with respect to teaching and research in Bangladesh. 8th European Crystallography School

ECS8, the 2023 European Crystallographic School, is planned as an in-person event.
The school will be held in Berlin, at the site of the BESSY II electron storage ring operated by the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin.
Up to 100 young international students and scientists will have the chance to meet with renowned lecturers and tutors and become acquainted with the most up-to-date principles and applications of X-ray crystallography.

School and Conference on Analysis of Diffraction Data in Real Space

The ADD2022 School and Conference aim to deepen the understanding and to further the training of the various communities working on real-space data analysis for neutron and x-ray diffraction techniques.  Fourier transformation of diffraction data into real-space, traditionally used for the structural determination of liquids and glasses, is now increasingly employed for partially-disordered crystalline powder samples, as well as for single-crystal samples exhibiting some local atomic disorder, and most recently for short-range spin-spin correlations in disordered or frustrated magnetic systems (in the case of neutron diffraction).
The scientific scope of ADD2022 pertains to both x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, and will again include single-crystal diffuse scattering as an integral part of the School and the Conference. Note that we also welcome presentations and participants in the field of e-beam diffraction having real-space analysis techniques.  The School proposes pedagogic lectures on real-space data-analysis techniques followed by 9 separate sessions of hands-on tutorials for training with various data-modelling software packages: DiffPy-CMI, diffpy.mpdf, DISCUS, Dissolve, EPSR, PDFgui, RMCProfile, Spinvert and Yell.  The Conference proposes 8 invited talks and about 16 additional oral contributions, as well as a poster session.
The Fourier transformation of diffraction data into real-space produces a Pair-Distribution Function (PDF) that provides a model-independent "snapshot" of the local structure within the sample.  The PDF(r) thus probes both static and dynamic atomic correlations (and also magnetic spin-spin correlations in the case of neutron diffraction).  The so-called "PDF-analysis" technique is therefore complementary to the well-known Rietveld method of refining diffraction data in Q-space that provides a space-time averaged picture of the sample's structure.  PDF-analysis now enjoys a wide field of application, in particular to nano-structured materials.
Building on the success of our previous ADD workshops in Grenoble (ADD2019 of 17-22 March 2019, ADD2016 of 7-11 March 2016, ADD2013 of 18-22 March 2013, ADD2011 of 12-14 October 2011), the ADD2019 School+Conference will start Sunday evening 16 October 2022 and finish Friday afternoon 21 October, a full 5-day programme that includes 2-1/2 days for the School followed by 2-1/2 days for the Conference, basically the same format as for ADD2019.
As compared to ADD2019, the 2022 edition includes two additional hands-on tutorials: (1) Dissolve, which builds on the success of EPSRÂ and employs similar techniques, but utilises a full classical forcefield and is extensible to multi-configuration, million-atom simulations, and (2) diffpy.mpdf, which as an extension module of DiffPy-CMI allows for real-space modeling of local magnetic spin correlations.
And as for ADD2019, ADD2022 also features pedagogic lectures on nitty-gritty data-reduction and data-correction techniques for x-ray and neutron diffraction as concerns liquids/glasses, disordered crystals and single-crystal diffuse scattering.
Real-space analysis of diffraction data deals with general structural concepts such as atomic/spin distribution functions and structural/magnetic correlation lengths, and now employs standard formulae common to neutron, x-ray and other diffraction techniques.  It therefore facilitates a synergetic convergence of hitherto largely disjoint communities: liquids/glasses diffraction, crystalline powder diffraction, single-crystal diffuse scattering and diffuse magnetic scattering.

Diffraction Methods in Structural Biology Gordon Research Conference

Structural biology is entering a new era. Not just the virus and biomedicine, not just astounding breakthroughs in prediction, but new and complimentary approaches are exploding onto the scene. It is time to imagine what could be achieved if there were no barriers to structural information, and to contemplate how we will combine our diverse strengths to overcome obstacles we always believed were insurmountable. An excellent place to start is crystallization, where the impact of any improvement would be very high, but predictive theory remains elusive. Preparation of electron microscopy grids faces a similar challenge. Each session will focus on a critical barrier in structural biology, and the goal will be formulating the best advice to newcomers to the field who will face these challenges. Where possible, test data with a clear scoring system will be defined, and friendly competition between proponents of different approaches will be encouraged. Current best practices will be described, evaluated and compared and the relative effectiveness of alternative approaches will be announced at the meeting. Open discussion is expected to uncover new insights, new approaches, new algorithms, and no doubt flaws in the tests. By the end of the meeting we will have established not only new best practices, but also improved the criteria we use to assess them.

Lectures will emphasise the fundamental structural aspects, with an introduction to the following concepts from modern geometry, crystallography and topology:
• Two-dimensional symmetries and orbifolds (wallpaper and point groups)
• Graph theory and net embeddings, knots and entanglement
• Triply-periodic minimal surfaces and related polycontinuous patterns
• 2D hyperbolic tilings and their embedding in 3D
No specialised mathematical knowledge is assumed, apart from some elementary familiarity with the shape of space, polyhedra and symmetry. The course will introduce students to unifying structural concepts in a range of ordered multi-phase hard/soft materials. We encourage students with theoretical or experimental backgrounds to attend.
The course will familiarise students with open-source software for construction and characterisation of structures from nets to surfaces. Hands-on tutorials will explore the concepts, via models and software like Kaleidotile, Surface Evolver, Houdini, GAVROG (3dt and Systre), RCSR, EPINET and HooMD for molecular simulations.
Symmetries in Graphs, Maps and Polytopes Workshop (SIGMAP) 2022

The Symmetries in Graphs, Maps, and Polytopes Workshop provides researchers interested in symmetries of discrete objects and structures opportunities to meet, share results, discuss open problems, and start new collaborations. The first SIGMAP workshop was organized by Stephen Wilson in 1998 in Flagstaff, Arizona, and has been held every four years since then. In 2022 we will be hosting the seventh iteration of this conference at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from July 10-16.
Thanks to support from the National Science Foundation, we’ll be able to provide a limited number of domestic participants with support for their travel and participation in the workshop. Priority for the funding will be given to mathematicians from under-represented groups and early career mathematicians.Â
