Elspeth F. Garman and Nicola Laurieri have brought their experience of teaching mathematics at the University of Oxford to Mathematics for Biosciences: From Theory to Worked Examples and Applications, published by World Scientific.
Designed primarily for first-year undergraduates in the biological and biomedical sciences, chemistry and medicine, the book connects mathematical principles with practical scientific problems. Topics range from algebra and graphs to differentiation, integration and differential equations, supported by worked examples and applications from the biosciences. It also offers a refresher for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers.
The approach draws on 25 years of teaching mathematics to nearly 3,000 Oxford biochemistry undergraduates. Garman, well known to the crystallographic community for her research and teaching in macromolecular crystallography, brings that same educational commitment to helping students develop their mathematical confidence.
Further details are available on the book’s publisher page. Readers can also find two reviews in the December 2025 issue of Crystallography News.
