On the fidelity and importance of first structural determinations
Why early crystal structures still matter
How well do crystallography’s earliest structure determinations stand up to modern scrutiny? In Acta Crystallographica Section B, Andrzej Katrusiak discusses a reassessment of 464 historical structures in the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database. Most remain consistent with later determinations, demonstrating the remarkable achievements of the field’s pioneers. The commentary considers how careful validation can preserve the scientific and historical value of these records while ensuring that databases remain reliable resources for contemporary research.
