It runs the German Engineering Materials Science Centre (GEMS) to exploit the complementary use of X-ray and neutron radiation for materials science. GEMS operates beamlines/instruments at the synchrotron radiation source PETRA III in Hamburg and the national neutron source Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ) in Garching near Munich. Among the GEMS instruments at MLZ is the horizontal time-of-flight reflectometer with GISANS option REFSANS, where user service and in-house research are carried out.
