structural biology, largely based on the use of synchrotron radiation
at DESY. The activities include technology and methods developments in
X-ray crystallography, Small Angle X-ray Scattering and X-ray
Absorption Spectroscopy, and a wide spectrum of biological research
projects. EMBL Hamburg operates seven synchrotron beamlines that are
available to the international user community and to in-house research
activities. The unit is involved in the design of new, state-of-the-
art synchrotron radiation beamlines for life science applications at
the PETRA ring that will become operational in 2007.
