REQUEST FOR HELP AND ADVICE
---------------------------
Hello Everyone,
This e-mail is somewhat disconnected to the normal imageNCIF mail,
but I think that it is going to many of the right people.
I have a trainee working at the ESRF for 1 year on the subject of data
compression for scientific image data. My idea is to get her to
investigate and quantify different loss-less compression algorithms in
terms of compression ratios, cpu time, total time. The algorithms would
be tested on a variety of types of scientific data e.g. PX, SAXS, powder
diffraction, tomography, topography, surface science etc. Probably as
importantly they would be tested on a number of different types of
detector.
The initial aim would be write a report which could be used to help
choose most appropriate alogrithms for different scientific areas, and
different demands e.g. high speed requirements, or maximum data compression
requirements. Hopefully this would take around 6 months.
This does not necessarily have a direct bearing on CBF, but one of the
algorithms would be the "byte offsets" algorithm which I have presently
suggested for CBF, and maybe other "successful" algorithms could be
incorporated into future CBF compression choices.
I'm asking if any of you can help with contributions of algorithms to
quantify, or are otherwise interested in collaborating ? Details of
sources of algorithms would be useful (aftp sites, www pages, etc.).
Similarly, references or details of previous work in this area would be
helpful.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
Andy
