Greetings ...

Well over 6 months ago I volunteered to translate Andy Hammersley's
draft for a CIF binary file extension into DDL 2.1. A very preliminary
version of the dictionary is now available in text and HTML formats at:

         http://ndbserver.rutgers.edu/NDB/mmcif/dictionary/

This extension dictionary has been developed so that it can be used
as a supplement to the mmCIF dictionary which you will find at the
same address. In addition to incorporating Andy's extensions,
this dictionary provides a general definition of one or more
array data sections. The dictionary does not specify the details
of how the array data would be managed relative to other mmCIF
data items. I favor the idea of handling the array data along with and
in the same manner as other mmCIF data (i.e. data types declared
in the form of regular expressions); however, they could just
as well be segregated in separate data blocks or delimited by
special comments.

Many thanks to Andy for his advice, and for reviewing the draft
dictionary.

Regards,

John
