imgCIF Workshop

Hello Everyone,

As mentioned in a previous e-mail Bob Sweet has been organizing a
workshop to finalize the "imageNCIF" draft format, and work on a
software interface.

The workshop dates are now finalized:

(Sunday 19th October: Evening Reception / buffet (to be confirmed))
    Monday 20th October: Open Discussions
Tuesday 21st October: "Working / coding"
Wednesday 22nd October: "Working / coding"

The workshop will take place at the Brookhaven National Laboratory,
Long Island. Accommodation will be available close to the laboratory
(as I understand things).

By bringing together many of the people interested in the format, this
workshop should allow, the few remaining unclear areas to be decided,
produce detailed specifications of the format, and progress in producing
a software library to write and read data files. It is hoped that
following the workshop there will be a working draft format. (A draft
format is necessary for experience in using the format, and for
community review for eventual IUCr approval.)

People who are interested in the general aspects of the format
(approach, scope, etc.), but who do not feel concerned with the details
nor with coding issues, should probably consider attending the first
day meeting (plus the reception). The later part of the workshop will
concern detailed implementation issues, including coding of a software
library.

Please note: It is assumed that participants will be familiar
with the issues which have been discussed by the e-mail group. (If you
are new to "imageNCIF", and intend to attend, you are invited to review
the e-mail discussions which are available from the list-server.)

People who are interested in attending should contact Bob Sweet
(SWEET@BNL.GOV). If you feel that you would like the opportunity
to present a talk on some issue, please also make this clear.
(There will be time for open discussions, which will include the
opportunity to put up overheads to make points clear. The above
concerns longer, slightly more formal, presentations.) Some contribution
to expenses may be available on request.

If you cannot attend, but nevertheless would like an issue to be
discussed at the meeting, please send an e-mail to the e-mail discussion
group.

(I might try to send some summaries of discussions during the workshop,
so "real-time" feedback may be possible from the e-mail group.)

Best Regards,

           Andy
