In-Situ Shale Characterization using Small Angle X-ray Scattering The Applied Energy Programs, a division of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, and Stanford University seeks a Postdoctoral Scholar for In-Situ Shale Characterization using Small Angle X-ray Scattering. The objective is to accurately assess pore sizes and geometries in shales and model porous media and to understand the flow of gasses in the pore network. The overall goal is to develop an understanding of the shale microstructural effects on gas production leading to enhanced recovery. This postdoc position involves working closely with researchers at Stanford and the French energy company Total (http://www.total.com/en). The two-three year postdoctoral position will involve the use of X-ray and neutron scattering and potentially X-ray imaging of the pore network in shales with a focus on in situ investigations of how the scattering changes under gas adsorption and flow. Data interpretation will be aided by modeling at the relevant shale length scales with molecular simulations methods and more direct numerical simulations. The effort involves design and development of a suitable reactor for gas adsorption and flow in porous media. Initial studies will use model porous materials before transitioning to relevant shales. Goals include understanding the gas adsorption mechanisms in porous media and the effect of pore topology on gas adsorption.
