Current and Future Computing Commission Issues

Dear Members of the IUCr Computing Commission

Our three year term comes to an end with the Florence 2005 meeting.

Some of our members have been very active in organising the Siena
Computing School. We have just the number of participants and teachers
in an excellent setting to make this school run under optimal
conditions.

Other activities included the creation of a WEB-site for our commission
and the distribution of a newsletter, all thanks to the big efforts of
Lachlan Cranswick.

The chairman has now to come with an advise on two issues to the
executive committee.

1 - A proposal for committee members for the next 2005-2008 period.
    (9 to 10 members)

This will be a difficult task.

We have the current membership (9 + 2), all eligable for an
additional term. (Please tell me if you wish to resign)

Some countries have provided names of candidates (8 new names)

There are a number of constraints to take into account:

1 - are all relevant (new) areas represented
2 - Good spread over the globe
3 - Our chairman, Bill Duax, urges us to include 25% females.

Please send me suggestions (in particular for 3) a.s.a.p.

2 - Planned new activities for the next period.

This could be another computing school addressing a different
topic than addressed in Siena (i.e. basic crystallographic software
    developement)

Please send me your input a.s.a.p.

I hope to see you all in Florence.

Best wishes

Ton Spek

Chairman of the Computing Commission
