The British Library would like to encourage the continued support for
digital preservation and digital availability by ICSTI as it was
expressed in the statement by David Russon for the 2002 General
Assembly. It is essential that aims such as defining archiving policies,
assigning responsibilities and ensuring a properly supported, funded and
sustainable infrastructure engage the support of organisations such as
ICSTI.

Challenges that are listed in the statement, such as defining whether
form as well as content need preservation, will require input from the
creators to find a solution and ICSTI is ideally positioned to reach the
source of digital resources.

To assist with increasing awareness, taking the issues forward to
government and supporting and sharing research into the challenging
issues raised the British Library would recommend cooperation/membership
with the Digital Preservation Coalition ( http://www.dpconline.org/ )
recently established in the UK with international collaboration. The DPC
is an ideal forum with comparable aims to assist with the progress ICSTI
desire.
