Postdoctoral Fellow Dynamic Compression of Planetary Materials

Description

Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL), Carnegie Institution for Science, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to study the high-pressure-temperature behavior of planetary core materials. The project will focus on the high-pressure-temperature structure and phase stability of the iron-light element alloys, with applications to understanding the behavior of materials under extreme conditions and their implications for the interiors of terrestrial planets. The project will involve using high-powered lasers to dynamically compress materials to the extreme pressure and temperature conditions of planetary cores, collecting diffraction and laser interferometry data. These data will then be applied to develop equations of state of iron alloys, mass-radius relationships, and predictions for dynamo magnetic fields at the conditions expected for super-Earths. The candidate will design and conduct experiments at National User Facilities, analyze experimental data, and incorporate the resulting data into planetary interior structure models. The fellow will work with Carnegie Staff Scientists Sally Tracy and Peter Driscoll.

Additional Information:

The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of an additional year pending progress and availability of funds. The position is expected to be available starting Fall 2024 and will remain open until filled. 

Qualifications


Minimum:

    • Ph.D. in Geosciences, Physics, Materials Science, or a related field.

Desired:

    • Strong hands-on experimental skills
    • The ability to work independently and collaboratively in a group environment.
    •  Experience in dynamic or static high-pressure techniques

Postdoctoral Fellow Dense Carbon

Description

Earth and Planets Laboratory (EPL), Carnegie Institution for Science, is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to study the high-pressure-temperature behavior of novel carbon-based materials. Static and dynamic compression experiments will investigate the complex behavior of dense carbon under compression and study the fundamental high-energy-density physics of carbon. This will include dynamic compression experiments at high-powered laser facilities and X-ray scattering experiments at light source facilities. The project will also involve high-pressure-temperature syntheses of metastable samples. The candidate will be responsible for designing and conducting experiments at National User Facilities and analyzing experimental data.
