Research Fellow The Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) is a unique research institute in Australia as it is a jointly funded initiative of UQ and Agri-Science Queensland and Biosecurity Queensland, part of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF). QAAFI conducts research and development to benefit the food and fibre sector both nationally and internationally. The Institute's strengths are reflected in its three research centres - the Centre for Plant Science, the Centre for Animal Science and the Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences. QAAFI brings together scientists from UQ and DAFF to conduct high-end science that delivers higher impact outcomes for industry and the community. The Centre for Nutrition and Food Sciences (CNAFS) is a partner in the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Plant Cell Walls with the Universities of Adelaide and Melbourne and a network of international research groups. The aims of the CoE are to advance fundamental scientific understanding of plant cell wall structures, interactions and applications. This includes investigating detailed polymer architecture and assembly of cell walls and model composites using advanced physical techniques such as neutron and X-ray scattering in collaboration with the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). The role Using scattering and diffraction methods available through ANSTO, the hierarchical architecture of plant cell walls and model systems will be studied. This will complement spectroscopic, rheological and microscopic studies being undertaken at UQ. The successful appointee will join the UQ Plant Cell Wall CoE group, but will be located primarily in ANSTO at Lucas Heights, near Sydney where they will also join the Food Science team. The person We are seeking a recent PhD graduate in chemistry, biology, materials science or a related area with a strong innovation focus, good communication skills and a proven publication record who can work well within small cross-disciplinary teams and can collaborate strongly with other research groups. Experience in the application of small-angle neutron or X-ray scattering methods including data analysis is essential. Remuneration This is a full-time, fixed term appointment at Academic level A4 for two years in the first instance, with a possible 1 year extension. The remuneration package will be in the range $70,676.68 - 75,867.70 p.a., plus employer superannuation contributions of up to 17% (total package will be in the range $82,691.71 - $88,765.21 p.a.).
