Postdoctoral Research Associate in Soft Condensed Matter Science

Reference Code: ORNL13-03-MSTD

Description

The Biology and Soft Matter Division and the Materials Science and Technology Division at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have an immediate opening for a joint Postdoctoral researcher position in the area of soft condensed matter science. The successful candidate will participate in research to study the structure and phase behavior of fluids confined in porous materials using small-angle neutron scattering technique and gas adsorption methods. Confined fluids include but are not limited to hydrogen, methane and carbon dioxide. Examples of the confining matrices include engineered materials such as activated carbons and silica xerogels as well as naturally occurring porous rock (coal and shale). The results of these studies are expected to contribute to the fundamental understanding of the effects of molecule-surface interactions as well as pore size and structure on the efficiency of confinement. This work will help develop new and existing technologies for gas storage and
  carbon sequestration.

The work involves material characterization, with an emphasis on small angle neutron scattering, surface area and adsorption measurements (both volumetric and gravimetric techniques), electron microscopy (scanning and transmission), and other characterization techniques.
