Dear colleagues,
We are pleased to announce the release of pyIrena 1.0, a Python-based package for small-angle scattering data analysis.
For 25 years, Irena (currently version 2.75, https://usaxs.xray.aps.anl.gov/software/irena) has provided SAS modeling and analysis tools within Igor Pro. pyIrena brings the most used features of Irena to Python, with results verified against Irena to ensure consistency.
pyIrena and Irena are complementary packages with designed data flows between them through either NXcanSAS files (pyIrena used format) or Igor HDF5 experiment files. pyIrena keeps a familiar GUI, the same tool names, and a level of file compatibility with Igor Irena, so existing users will feel at home. At the same time, it offers capabilities impossible in Igor Pro: it is fully scriptable for integration into automated data reduction and analysis pipelines, and it provides an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server for wiring the analysis tools into AI-driven experiments and agentic workflows.
pyIrena is open source and runs on all major operating systems. It is available on PyPI (pip install pyirena) and on GitHub:
