The 70th anniversary Annual Meeting and General Assembly of the Crystallographic Society of Japan (CrSJ2020) and the satellite symposium “The COVID-19 pandemic and the current and future views of crystallography” were held online during 27–29 November 2020. The meeting was initially planned to be held at Tsukuba, Japan, but was switched to an online meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic. About 200 crystallographers participated in the meeting. There were 109 presentations covering all aspects of crystallography, and five award lectures. In the satellite symposium we had eight invited lectures.

At the CrSJ Awards Ceremony, the S. Nishikawa Award was given to Keiko Nishikawa (Toyota Physical and Chemical Institute) for her research “Pioneering study in structural science of fluctuations for complex condensed systems”; the Research Award was given to Hideaki Ogata (Hokkaido University) for his research “Structural and chemical study of metalloenzymes” and Kei Wada (Miyazaki University) for his research “Study of structural basis for molecular mechanisms of cellular redox control”; and the Young Crystallographer Award was given to Takao Arimori (Osaka University) for his research “Development of a novel antibody fragment format 'Fv-clasp' applicable to protein crystallization” and Shogo Kawaguchi (Japan Synchrotron Radiation Research Institute) for his research “Development of sub-second synchrotron radiation powder diffraction measurement system under various gas atmospheres”.

Five young scientists were honored with Student Presentation Awards: K. Yamashita (University of Tokyo), N. Toyama (Nagoya Institute of Technology), M. Isobe (Osaka City University), N. Nakamura (Osaka University) and T. Sato (Hokkaido University) (see photo at the top of this page).

The Young Crystallographers' Meeting 2020, a satellite meeting of CrSJ2020, was held online on 13 November, and 50 researchers/students participated. This meeting is held every year to give young researchers and graduate students the opportunity to communicate and network with each other, especially beyond the barriers between physics, mineralogy, chemistry and biology, in an informal environment. This year, three lectures by K. Yamashita (University of Tokyo), S. Maruyama (Chiba University) and D. Morikawa (Tohoku University) were given and the participants engaged in lively discussion.

The full program of the meeting can be viewed here. The chair of the organization committee was E. Nishibori (Tsukuba University) and the program committee was chaired by S. Adachi (KEK).

The next annual meeting will be held during 19–21 November 2021 at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan. The chair of the organization committee is Min Yao (Hokkaido University) and the program committee is chaired by Katsumi Maenaka (Hokkaido University).
