FITS (Flexible Image Transport System) format

I would like to suggest that instead of inventing a new file format,
that you consider using the FITS format. It is the file format used
by the astronomical community. It has many of the features discussed
in this group such as ascii header, binary data. It is extremely well
documented, and a subroutine library (FITSIO) has been written for
use with FORTRAN and C on almost all computers. There are a large
number of tools available for reading/writing/processing these files,
and even xv can read and write FITS files.
