Re: The quest for tentative approval.

Herb,

I'm swamped at the moment with a review committee and interviews for new
employees.  I will be very pleased if you will make the detailed contact
with the IUCr implied in your note.  I frankly had thought that you had
done it after our last exchange, but know how those things go.

Several of us at synchrotron sources (Daresbury, Stanford, Brookhaven)
have agreed to take roughly the end of calendar 2000 as the point at which
we will start to write only CBF (binary imgCIF) files.  Two notes:

1. We have firm assurances that the software vendors will be able to read
these files, but 

2. This will depend upon us being able to give them complete data sets
well in advance that have been produced with this format. 

3. I strongly recommend that we begin to produce files only with no
compression applied.
