Satellite meeting on Data Publication

Audience Delegates at the Data Publication workshop.
The satellite workshop on data publication in crystallography yesterday was attended by a healthy number of delegates 70(10) who resisted the temptation to go sightseeing before the conference and joined us to discuss the issues surrounding the publication of data. There were two sessions involving 10 different talks – one focused on (open) data archives and the next on publication, databases and reuse. We must have either presented something worthwhile or controversial as pretty much everybody returned after lunch for the open discussion session. The purpose of this session was to canvass the community opinion on a number of ‘sticking points’ in the area – a lively discussion was had, which homed in mainly on the topics of peer review and copyright.
Audience Saulius Grazulis of the Crystallography Open Database.
This workshop forms part of a series of such events (www.crystalgrid.org) and we are now intending to write up our findings and use them as a contribution to an IUCr ‘white paper’ on the topic. The organisers would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who participated – both presenters and the audience!
