We mourn the loss of former IUCr President André Authier, Professor Emeritus at Pierre and Marie Curie (now Sorbonne) University, Paris, France, who died recently at the age of 90. Professor Authier served the IUCr for 45 years (since 1969) as member/Chair of the Commissions on Crystallographic Teaching, Crystal Growth and Characterisation of Materials, and Crystallographic Nomenclature; on the IUCr Executive Committee [1984–1996 (President 1990–1993)]; as Section Editor of Acta Cryst. A (1993–2011); and as Editor of International Tables Volume D: Physical properties of crystals.
He played an essential role in nurturing CIF in the early days, and in directing the strategy of IUCr journals in particular and scientific publishing generally, through his involvement with ICSU in setting up the early Electronic Publishing in Science conference in 1996. He was also the guiding light behind the Online Dictionary of Crystallography, showing that he was still very enthusiastic about new initiatives and information technologies well into retirement.
Professor Authier's expertise in the dynamical theory of X-ray diffraction led to a book of the same name, and his interest in the history of crystallography culminated in the publication of the book Early Days of X-ray Crystallography, which was published in 2013 to coincide with the centenary of the discovery of X-ray diffraction.
