Henk Schenk (1939–2023) [posted 27 Sep 2023]
We announce with a heavy heart that former IUCr President Henk Schenk, Professor Emeritus at the University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, died on 14 September 2023. Professor Schenk served on the IUCr Executive Committee [1993–2005 (President 1999–2002)], as Co-editor of Acta Cryst. A (2008–2021), as Editor of International Tables Volume H: Powder diffraction, and on numerous IUCr Commissions and Committees. He was also Guest Editor of two collections of articles commissioned to celebrate the 50th and 60th anniversaries of Acta Crystallographica and the IUCr. A tribute from the Dutch Crystallographic Society, of which Professor Schenk was co-founder and first President, can be read here.
African Crystallographic Association becomes fifth IUCr Regional Associate! [posted 05 Sep 2023]
The 26th IUCr General Assembly approved the African Crystallographic Association's application, presented by President Professor Delia Haynes, to become a Regional Associate of the IUCr. The mission of the African Crystallographic Association is to contribute to the advancement of science on the African continent via crystallography in all its aspects, including related topics concerning the structure and related properties of non-crystalline states, and to promote African cooperation in crystallography. New IUCr Executive Committee elected [posted 05 Sep 2023]
At the third session of the 26th IUCr General Assembly on 27 August 2023, Professor Santiago García-Granda (University of Oviedo, Spain) was elected as IUCr President, Professor Graciela Díaz de Delgado (Universidad de Los Andes, Mérida, Venezuela) as IUCr Vice-President and Professor Trevor Forsyth (Lund University, Sweden) as General Secretary and Treasurer. They will be joined on the IUCr Executive Committee by the Immediate Past President Dr Hanna Dabkowska (McMaster University, Hamilton, ON, Canada); newly elected ordinary members Professor Susan Bourne (University of Cape Town, South Africa), Professor Atsushi Nakagawa (Osaka University, Japan) and Professor Maria Cristina Nonato (University of São Paulo, Brazil); and existing ordinary members Dr Angela Altomare (Institute of Crystallography – CNR, Bari, Italy), Dr Thomas Proffen (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN, USA) and Dr Manfred Weiss (Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, Germany).
Berlin to host 28th IUCr Congress in 2029 [posted 04 Sep 2023]
At the 26th IUCr General Assembly, the IUCr 2029 team successfully presented the German Crystallographic Society's bid to host the 28th IUCr Congress in Berlin, Germany, in 2029. The Congress has only been held in Germany once before, when Hamburg played host in 1984. To see the many attractions of Berlin, watch this video.
The IUCr crystal growing competition for schoolchildren is back! [posted 12 Jun 2023]
After an enforced break of three years, we are delighted to announce that the IUCr Crystal growing competition for schoolchildren is back. The competition is open to all schoolchildren (maximum age 18) and aims to introduce students to the exciting, challenging and sometimes frustrating world of growing crystals. Read more here.
Robert Fayzullin awarded 2023 Struchkov Prize [posted 03 Apr 2023]
Many congratulations to Robert R. Fayzullin (Laboratory of Diffraction Research Methods, Arbuzov Institute of Organic and Physical Chemistry, FRC Kazan Scientific Center, Russian Academy of Sciences, Kazan, Russia), who has won the 2023 Struchkov Prize for his work on real-space interpretation of chemical bonding by combining one-electron potentials and associated force fields derived from high-resolution X-ray diffraction data. 2023 W. H. and W. L. Bragg Prize awarded to Arkadiy Simonov [posted 28 Mar 2023]
Very well deserved, the 2023 W. H. and W. L. Bragg Prize for outstanding early-career crystallographers has been awarded to Arkadiy Simonov (ETH Zürich, Switzerland) for his development of the three-dimensional difference pair distribution function approach and its transformative effect on the field of materials. David G. Watson (1934–2023) [posted 25 Mar 2023]
We are sad to report the death of Dr David G. Watson, who worked alongside Dr Olga Kennard in establishing the Cambridge Structural Database in 1965. Dr Watson, along with Professor Bill Clegg, was a founding Section Editor of Acta Cryst. E: Structure Reports Online, the IUCr's first purely electronic journal, which was launched in 2001. He also served, in an ex officio capacity, on several IUCr Commissions. Read more here.
André Authier (1932–2023) [posted 24 Mar 2023]
We mourn the loss of former IUCr President André Authier, Professor Emeritus at Pierre and Marie Curie (now Sorbonne) University, Paris, France, who died recently at the age of 90. Professor Authier served the IUCr for 45 years (since 1969) as Chair of various Commissions, on the IUCr Executive Committee [1984–1996 (President 1990–1993)], as Section Editor of Acta Cryst. A (1993–2011) and as Editor of International Tables Volume D: Physical properties of crystals. Read more here.
Registration for 2023 IUCr Crystallographic Computing School now open [posted 23 Mar 2023]
The 2023 Crystallographic Computing School is a satellite to the 26th IUCr Congress in Melbourne, and will be held at the Australian Synchrotron from 19 to 22 August. The school is intended for all programmers and method developers in all areas of crystallography (macromolecular, chemical, materials etc.). See here for more information.
Olga Kennard (1924–2023) [posted 06 Mar 2023]
We regret to announce the recent death of Olga Kennard OBE FRS, founder of the Cambridge Structural Database and winner of the 12th Ewald Prize, one of numerous accolades for her many achievements. Read the CCDC's celebration of Dr Kennard's life here.
Uri Shmueli (1928–2023) [posted 26 Feb 2023]
We are sad to pass on the news that Uri Shmueli, Professor Emeritus at Tel Aviv University, Israel, died on 15 February 2023. An excellent scientist, Professor Shmueli had a long-standing association with the IUCr as Editor of International Tables Volume B: Reciprocal space. An obituary will be published in due course.
Wayne A. Hendrickson wins 13th Ewald Prize [posted 24 Feb 2023]
We send hearty congratulations to Wayne A. Hendrickson (Columbia University, NY, USA), winner of the 13th Ewald Prize for his exceptional contribution to structural biology including the development of MAD/SAD methods and crystallographic theory. Professor Hendrickson will deliver the Ewald Prize Lecture during the Opening Ceremony of the 26th IUCr Congress on 22 August 2023. Read more here.
Jian-Min Zuo wins 2023 Gjønnes Medal [posted 22 Feb 2023]
We are delighted to announce that Jian-Min Zuo (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA) is the recipient of the 2023 Gjønnes Medal for his outstanding contributions to the development and application of quantitative electron diffraction. Professor Zuo will present a Keynote Lecture at the 26th IUCr Congress in Melbourne in August 2023. Read more here.
