Dieter Schwarzenbach (1936–2024)

We were saddened to learn of the recent death of Dieter Schwarzenbach, Emeritus Professor at EPFL, Lausanne, Switzerland, at the age of 88. Professor Schwarzenbach was Editor of the IUCr's flagship journal, Acta Cryst. A, from 2002 to 2011, during which time several special issues were published to increase its visibility. One of these, "60 years of Acta Crystallographica and the IUCr" with Henk Schenk as Guest Editor and Gernot Kostorz as Editor-in-Chief, was simultaneously published in 2008 as a hardback book, Crystallography Across the Sciences 2. This collection of articles included "A short history of SHELX" by George Sheldrick, which famously caused the journal to achieve impact factors of 49.9 and 54.3 in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

Professor Schwarzenbach also chaired the IUCr Commission on Crystallographic Nomenclature's Subcommittee on Statistical Descriptors, which was established in 1984 to examine the validity of statistical approaches used in estimating the variances in crystallographic quantities and to make recommendations for an improved methodology that rested securely on sound statistical theory for adoption by crystallographers.

A full obituary will be published in due course.
