We are delighted to announce that the Senegalese Crystallography Association is organising its first «Cristal Ô» day on 19 February 2024 at the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University Cheikh Anta Diop, Dakar, Senegal. The event, which is being held in collaboration with the IUCr and the African Crystallographic Association, marks a significant milestone in the advancement of crystallography in Senegal and beyond. The Third Pan African Conference on Crystallography, currently taking place in Nairobi, Kenya, is providing a platform for crystallographers to call on African governments to provide proper infrastructure to support research into problems facing the continent, thereby stimulating economic growth. The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre welcomes new applicants for its FAIRE grants to support structural chemistry education and research in over 80 eligible countries. The FAIRE grants provide access to the Cambridge Structural Database, software and training, allowing scientists to achieve their research goals, some of which are being showcased at the Third Pan African Conference on Crystallography, currently being held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The 20th International Conference on Crystal Growth and Epitaxy (ICCGE-20) will take place in Naples, Italy, from 30 July to 4 August 2023. ICCGE-20 will provide sessions for presentation and discussion regarding recent research and development activities in all aspects of crystal growth, epitaxy, characterization and applications including both general sessions and special topical symposia; the abstract submission deadline is 31 January 2023.

The Congress organisers thank those who have submitted abstracts and appreciate the enthusiastic response from the global community. For those who need more time, the abstract submission portal will remain open until 21 February 2023. In addition, the early bird registration deadline has been extended to 31 March 2023.

Building on the successes of recent International Years that have celebrated basic sciences [e.g. Chemistry 2011; Crystallography 2014 (IYCr2014); Light 2015; Periodic Table of Chemical Elements 2019], the UNESCO-approved International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development 2022 (IYBSSD2022) was launched in early July 2022. Now, hot on its heels, today sees the launch of Mineralogy 2022, a global initiative to highlight the importance of mineralogy as a basic fundamental science.

The International Union of Crystallography (IUCr), which is both a global scientific union and a publisher of crystallographic journals and books, seeks an Executive Secretary (Chief Executive Officer) to manage the organisation and to administer its day-to-day operations in Chester, UK.

The IUCr offers a competitive salary in the range £60,000–£80,000 pa with excellent benefits.
