Join us in celebrating the IUCr's 75th anniversary in 2023
The International Union of Crystallography turns a grand age of 75 in 2023 but whereas most 75-year-olds are happily retired, there is no rest planned for the IUCr.
2023 is the year when we will see a new regional associate, the African Crystallography Association (AfCA), apply to join the ranks alongside America, Asia & Australasia, Europe and Latin America. In the Chester offices, we are beginning a new digital transformation to modernise the IT infrastructure and improve online interactions of website visitors. You may have already spotted the new campaign logo to celebrate the anniversary, which is part of this process. Identifying our key purpose, goals and values will be important to make sure the Union is delivering the type of work our members require to support their science. As ever, the Union relies on the goodwill and time invested by our supporters, commissions, editors and reviewers to ensure that we can continue to offer our substantial outreach programme. Without this tremendous and continued support from the crystallographic community, the Union would not be the same.
The IUCr hopes that you will join us in celebrating the IUCr’s milestone anniversary and look forward to seeing many of you in Melbourne at the 26th IUCr Congress. There are several key decisions that will be presented in Melbourne so if you are yet undecided about attending, please think about coming for the General Assembly and having your say in the running of the Union.
The dawn of the IUCrThe turn of the 20th century saw an increased interest in crystallography, no doubt spurred on by Laue's discovery of X-ray diffraction followed immediately by the invention of crystal structure analysis by the two Braggs. By 1946, the subject had garnered enough interest to warrant an international meeting in London, UK, attended by around 330 scientists globally. Once the IUCr was formally admitted to the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU) on 7 April 1947, the International Union of Crystallography planned its first General Assembly and Congress at Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA. The first IUCr Congress was held from 28 July to 3 August 1948 thus marking the start of this highly successful and popular Union. |
