Standard symbols and nomenclature for the subperiodic groups are recommended for use in publications of the IUCr. Symbols are given for the 7 frieze groups, 80 rod groups and 75 layer groups in the forthcoming Volume E of International Tables for Crystallography: Subperiodic Groups. Along with symmetry tables, Volume E includes the classification of the subperiodic groups and a compilation and comparison of the nomenclature and sets of symbols that have been used for these groups.
Preprints of the Report are available from the second author pending the publication of Volume E of International Tables for Crystallography.
* Original version of the Report received by the IUCr Commission on Crystallographic Nomenclature 19 June 1991, final version accepted 8 July 1992. Publication of the Abstract only, as advance notice of the Report as it will appear in Volume E of International Tables for Crystallography, accepted 20 January 1993.
