Dear SAS community,
BioCAT, which runs the small angle scattering and diffraction beamline at18ID at the Advanced Photon Source, is looking for a beamline scientist tolead our SAXS user program.
Please see below for full information. I'm happy to discuss the positionwith anyone who is interested.
All the best.

Beamline Scientist at the BioCAT Beamline at the Advanced Photon Source
The Biophysics Collaborative Access Team (BioCAT) at the Illinois Instituteof Technology operates the world-class biological small angle X-rayscattering and diffraction beamline 18ID at the Advanced Photon Source(APS), Argonne National Laboratory (near Chicago, IL). The facility is usedby scientists and students from university, government, and industrial labsaround the world. These groups use BioCAT to conduct research in areas frombasic biomedical research to translational medicine.
BioCAT is seeking a Ph.D. level scientist to lead the solution small angleX-ray scattering (SAXS) user program. You will serve as a beamlinescientist, supporting in-person and remote/mail-in users of the BioCATfacility. You will have primary responsibility for supporting SAXS users atthe beamline, and maintaining the state-of-the-art sample preparation andsample delivery and characterization equipment. You will also collaboratescientifically with users and other beamline staff.
Responsibilities:- Support and grow an active user community, including users from academia, government, and industry, using solution SAXS on biological macromoleculesfor biomedical research.- Collaborate scientifically with users, including on experimental design, data analysis and interpretation, and publication.- Contribute to the development and implementation of advancedmethodologies for SAXS, both experimental and analytical, and to theimprovement of the X-ray scattering instrument.- Train students and new users in data collection and analysis for SAXS.- Maintain and enhance the sample preparation, characterization, anddelivery capabilities for SAXS. This includes extensive liquidchromatography instrumentation.
Essential qualifications: - Ph.D. or equivalent in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, ora related field.- Interest and ability to work in a fast-paced collaborative researchenvironment.- Record of scientific publications.- Ability to work and communicate effectively with technical experts, operations staff, and researchers at all levels, including students, postdocs, and facility users.
Preference will be given to candidates with significant experience inhands-on biological macromolecular purification and biophysicalcharacterization. Significant structural biology experience is also highlydesirable. Extensive experience with small angle scattering (either ofneutrons or X-rays) is an asset, but training in this technique can beprovided on the job.
For further information about the position, please contact BioCAT DirectorTom Irving (irving@iit.edu) or Deputy Director Jesse Hopkins (jhopkins1@iit.edu). Applications received by August 9th are guaranteed fullconsideration, but applications will be accepted until the position isfilled.
