The molecular structure is composed of discrete neutral Cu^II units of [Cu(CF₃SO₃)₂(C₁₆H₁₈N₄)], which have been derived from the flexidentate bis(pyridylimine) ligand, N,N'-bis[1-(pyridin-2-yl)ethylidene]ethane-1,2-diamine, in which the two pyridylimine binding units are linked by an ethylene spacer. The ligand acts as a tetradentate chelate in the equatorial plane and the weakly bonded triflate ligands above and below this plane complete the monomeric CuN₄O₂ chromophore of tetragonally distorted pseudo-octahedral geometry.
