Six two- and three-component ammonium carboxylate salt structures with a ladder-type hydrogen-bonding motif, three incorporating neutral carboxylic acid molecules

When combining two or more different molecules into one crystalline unit, complimentary hydrogen-bonding interactions are essential. One of the most reliable methods is to form an ammonium carboxylate salt by using two different molecules, one containing an amine and the second a carboxylic acid functional group. In this paper, we show that it is possible to hydrogen bond the neutral form of the carboxylic acid molecule to the charge-assisted hydrogen bonds of the salt by deliberately using half of the required stoichiometric amount of acid.
