[Openlab Argentina]The IUCr is working on a major new design and theme for its portfolio of journals. Bolder colours and a dynamic webpage design – alongside the launch of its new open-access journal, IUCrJ – herald a new chapter for the 66-year-old stable of journals of the International Union of Crystallography.

Over the next few weeks you’ll see more elements of our new journal design feeding through promotional leaflets and flyers, which you’ll be able to pick up at meetings we’ll be attending: ACA, Albuquerque, NM, USA, 24–28 May 2014; E-MRS, Lille, France, 26–30 May 2014; and EPDIC14, Aarhus, Denmark, 15–18 June 2014.

Further afield, we have some great news and results to report from our friends in Argentina who ran an IUCr-UNESCO OpenLab sponsored by Agilent Technologies and OlexSys Ltd. The OpenLab attracted around 80 applications from students, researchers and faculty from across the region and beyond. Of these hopeful candidates, only 37 could be selected for the oversubscribed lab, which ran from 3 to 10 May. These delegates came from universities and research centres in Argentina (20), Bolivia (2), Brazil (4), Columbia (3), Costa Rica (1), México (2), Perú (2), Uruguay (2) and USA (1). Staying on the theme of events, this year the 23rd Congress and General Assembly of the IUCr takes place in Montreal, Canada between 5 and 12 August. This major event, which brings together some of the leading researchers in the field to exchange ideas and discuss new directions, is accompanied by a number of dynamic satellite workshops, tutorials and similar, which orbit the core conference. A popular satellite meeting at this event that has been running since 1963 is the IUCr Commission on Crystallographic Computing School. Taking place from 29 July to 4 August, the school will introduce modern methods of programming crystallographic calculations in a series of lectures and in-depth tutorials.
