Visit of Professor Larsen, former IUCr President, to University of Havana

foto1Professor Sine Larsen visited the Physics Faculty of the University of Havana, Cuba, on January 8 with the aim of promoting crystallography and related actions at the international, regional and national levels and to meet Cuban crystallographers and researchers, using crystallography as a tool for their investigations. The talk given by Professor Larsen dealt with the great impact of available neutron sources and X-ray synchrotron facilities on crystallographic research, offering at the same time, new opportunities for unique experiments that exploit the intense beams often combined with highly specialized sample environment.

She also talked about Free Electron Lasers (FEL), a new type of X-ray sources, that have become operational in a number of laboratories around the world and more are under construction. The ultrafast pulses of high brightness from the X-ray free-electron lasers have already shown their ability to open completely new avenues for crystallographic research, bringing the potential of discoveries in a wide range of scientific areas.

Professor Larsen explained what the International Year of Crystallography meant, referring to the most important activities organized by the IUCr in order to celebrate the centenary of the beginning of modern crystallography.
