Sidney C. Abrahams (1924-2021)
We are sad to report the death of Sidney C. Abrahams at the age of 96. Dr Abrahams (born London, UK; died Ashland, OR, USA) was a frequent participant at IUCr Congresses and it was during the 11th Congress, in Warsaw, Poland, in 1978 that the IUCr Executive Committee invited him to succeed Arthur Wilson as Editor of Acta Crystallographica. During his nine-year term of office, he instigated the move of journal page production to the IUCr offices in Chester, UK, and oversaw the split of Section B into Sections B and C, the latter to absorb Mario Nardelli's Crystal Structure Communications.
Dr Abrahams also served on several non-publishing IUCr Commissions: Crystallographic Apparatus, Charge Density, Crystallographic Nomenclature and Crystallographic Studies at Controlled Pressure and Temperature Conditions; on the IUCr Finance Committee; as General Editor of the fifth edition of the World Directory of Crystallographers in 1977 (the first edition to use a computerised typesetting system) and as US delegate to the IUCr General Assembly. His many contributions to crystallography are memorialised on the ACA history portal.
