Jack D. Dunitz (1923-2021) [posted 14 Sep 2021] We are sad to report the death of Jack Dunitz, Professor Emeritus at ETH-Zürich, Switzerland, at the age of 98. Professor Dunitz was widely valued as an insightful scientist, an inspirational teacher and a witty raconteur, who shaped the development of modern crystallography over more than 70 years.
More IUCr Executive Committee election results – Vice-President and first ordinary member elected [posted 21 Aug 2021] Professor Santiago García-Granda (University of Oviedo, Spain) has been elected as Vice-President of the IUCr, and Dr Thomas Proffen (Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Oak Ridge, TN, USA) the first of the three new ordinary members of the IUCr Executive Committee.
John C. H. Spence (1946-2021) [posted 01 Jul 2021] We regret to announce the recent death of John Spence, Richard Snell Professor of Physics at Arizona State University (Tempe, AZ, USA), Director of Science at the National Science Foundation BioXFEL Science and Technology Center (Buffalo, NY, USA) and much-respected Editor of IUCrJ.
Trust Science Pledge [posted 19 May 2021] The message of the International Day of Light 2021 – Trust Science – encourages both scientists and the public alike to sign and support a declaration affirming their trust in science and the importance of public confidence in the scientific process.
25th IUCr Congress and General Assembly to definitely take place in August 2021 [posted 29 Mar 2021] The IUCr Executive Committee has decided that the Congress will definitely go ahead in August 2021. At present, it is hoped that the Congress and General Assembly will both be a hybrid of online and in-person participation.
Sidney C. Abrahams (1924-2021) [posted 08 Mar 2021] We are sad to report the death of Sidney C. Abrahams at the age of 96. Dr Abrahams was Editor of Acta Crystallographica from 1978 to 1987.
Aminoff Prize rewards “explosive” studies of biological macromolecules [posted 22 Sep 2020] The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Gregori Aminoff Prize 2021 to Henry Chapman (University of Hamburg, Germany), Janos Hajdu (Uppsala University, Sweden) and John Spence (Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ, USA) “for their fundamental contributions to the development of X-ray free electron laser based structural biology”.
25th IUCr Congress postponed until August 2021 [posted 26 Mar 2020] In view of the coronavirus pandemic, it has been decided to postpone the 25th IUCr Congress until August 2021.
