George M. Sheldrick (1942–2025)

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of George Michael Sheldrick, a prominent figure in crystallography whose contributions have shaped the field for decades.
George’s SHELX programs for structure solution and refinement have been fundamental to crystallographic research, enabling countless breakthroughs across chemistry, biology, and materials science.
His impact is perhaps best illustrated by a single paper that sent Acta Crystallographica A’s impact factor soaring to 54 in 2010, a testament to how widely his methods have been adopted and how many scientific projects have been enabled by his brilliance.
The full obituary is published in Acta Cryst. A81.
