Paul Francis McMillan (1956–2022)
We are sad to report the death of Paul McMillan, the Sir William Ramsay Chair of Chemistry at University College London, UK. An enthusiastic teacher and mentor, Professor McMillan's interests were in the exploration of solid-state chemistry under extreme high-pressure and high-temperature conditions using large presses and laser heating techniques in the diamond anvil cell, and the study of the properties and structure of liquids, amorphous solids and biological molecules at high pressure.

A member of the European High Pressure Research Group, Professor McMillan can be seen here co-chairing the Novel Materials and Physical Properties at High Pressure session at the 19th IUCr Congress in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2002 (photo contributed to the IUCr archive by W. L. Duax).
More information about Professor McMillan's life and career can be found on his departmental website and in his Wikipedia entry.
