Uwe Grimm (1963–2021)

It is with sorrow that we relay the news of the death of Uwe Grimm, Professor of Mathematics at The Open University, Milton Keynes, UK. Professor Grimm was a much-valued Co-editor of Acta Crystallographica Section A and Consultant to the IUCr Commission on Aperiodic Crystals, which he chaired from 2014 to 2017.

Uwe Grimm completed a doctorate degree in Physics at the University of Bonn, Germany, and spent eight years as a postdoctoral researcher in Melbourne, Amsterdam and Chemnitz before joining The Open University in late 2000. His main research interest was the theory of aperiodic order – read his Acta Crystallographica Section B Feature Article "Aperiodic crystals and beyond" here – but he was also involved in the application of mathematics, in particular in physics and biology, and in public engagement.

A full obituary will be published in due course.
