Re: [dddwg] DDDWG: Standards for metadata

Dear all
I haven't had much to add to the discussion in the past - as a powder diffractionist I don't have much relevant experience in either macromolecules or their databases - I do read the emails though!
However a move into Nexus-land and associated metadata does start to come closer to home. Here at SNS we use event-mode data collection which involves a position and time-stamp for each neutron event on the detectors. We add a multitude of metadata tagging the neutron events so the metadata often changes during a run. We do use Nexus format, but with the time component the file size depends on how long the data is collected. For us the metadata is more than a useful archiving tool as we can use it to slice and dice the data from a single dataset however we wish even years after it was collected.
Standard powder data is usually less than 500MB but the single crystal instruments here have huge file sizes. Currently both the raw pre-Nexus and Nexus data are archived but it remains to be seen whether storage becomes an issue in the coming years.
If you think there may be some benefit in talking with our data acquisition people I can put you in touch with them.
Best regardsPam

Hi DDDWG members!
As Wladek has mentioned, we have set up a small working group to develop standards for metadata for diffraction images. The members of the working group are Andreas Forster, Wladek Minor, and Loes Kroon-Batenburg.
Wladek has drafted a starting point for these standards and I have attached an edited version. Your comments are welcome and I have included emails for the working group members so that they can see your comments!
All the best,Tom T_______________________________________________dddwg mailing listdddwg@iucr.orghttp://mailman.iucr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/dddwg
