(Bill) Duax's high school science program of tracing the evolution of life on Earth through the genetic code, and creating an evolutionary tree of bacteria, has been selected as the regional winner in Time Warner Cable's Super Connector Search.
ESS and ILL Start Joint R&D in Neutron Science [posted 26 Sep 2011]  The European Spallation Source and the Institut Laue-Langevin have initiated an extensive collaboration for research and development activities within neutron science.
New discussion forums service [posted 26 Sep 2011]  A number of discussion forums have been established at a new web site, forums.iucr.org to facilitate communication within IUCr Commissions, committees and working groups.
Switzerland Joins ESS Collaboration [posted 21 Sep 2011]  Switzerland has now formally joined the international ESS collaboration.
Cellcheck CSD [posted 17 Aug 2011]  CellCheckCSD, developed for automated use through Agilent's CrysAlisPro, enables users to check their pre-experiment unit cell against the CSD before collecting a full diffraction dataset. The aim is to avoid wasting any valuable diffractometer time due to unintentional collection of a full dataset for a known crystal structure.
A Scientific Day for the International Council of Science (ICSU) [posted 04 Jul 2011]  Seven speakers of excellence will present the multifaceted topic "From Elementary Chemical Processes to Complex Biological Structures
for the Benefit of Life and Human Health" in Florence, in an ICSU event to honour the delegates of about 30 scientific Unions. It is open to researchers, teachers and students interested in atomic and molecular sciences and their applications with benefit for humanity.
Ninth Ewald Prize [posted 26 Apr 2011]  The Ninth Ewald Prize has been awarded to Professor E. Dodson, Professor C. Giacovazzo and Professor G.M. Sheldrick for the impact they have made on structural crystallography by designing new methods and providing these in algorithms and user software.

Logo design competition for the International Year of Crystallography [posted 17 Feb 2011]  Entries are invited for the design of a logo for the International Year of Crystallography.
ICDD announces the recipients of the 2011 Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship [posted 20 Jan 2011]  The ICDD Ludo Frevel Crystallography Scholarship Committee has selected thirteen recipients for the 2011 Scholarship Program. These recipients were selected, on a competitive basis, from sixty-five commendable applications received by the ICDD Scholarship Committee.

2010 Hanawalt Award [posted 21 Oct 2010]  The International Centre for Diffraction Data has announced that Dr Takeshi Egami and Dr Simon J. L.  Billinge were selected to receive the 2010 J. D. Hanawalt Award for excellence in the field of X-ray powder diffraction.
The Aminoff Prize 2011: Biological minerals inspires for the future [posted 23 Sep 2010]  The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has awarded The Gregori Aminoff Prize in crystallography 2011 to Professor Lia Addadi and Professor Stephen Weiner (Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel) for their crystallographic studies of biomineralization processes.
Study of Open-Access Publishing [posted 12 Jul 2010]  A web survey is being conducted by the SOAP (Study of Open Access Publishing) project, financed by the European Commission. The study is investigating publishing practices and attitudes towards Open Access publishing. Authors of papers in crystallography journals (especially those with experience of open-access publishing) are invited to take the online survey before 25 July 2010; it should take no longer than 10-15 minutes to complete.
Chair of Commission on Crystallographic Computing [posted 18 Jun 2010]  Professor H. R. Powell has been appointed Chair of the Commission on Crystallographic Computing until the Madrid Congress.
