Crystallography in the Former Soviet Union

The ACA/USNCCr Fund

The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation is providing $25,000 to support crystallographic research in the Former Soviet Union (FSU) on a matching basis through the ACA/USNCCr Program for assistance to FSU Crystallographers. ACA members and the US crystallographic community have donated $10,000 in response to an appeal from Nobel laureates J. Deisenhofer, H. Hauptman, and J. Karle. On May 23, 1993 a subcommittee appointed by Robert Bryan, the Chairman of the US National Committee for Crystallography and headed by W. L. Duax, reviewed over 60 applications from crystallographers in 18 leading universities and research facilities in the FSU, and selected 40 grants for immediate award of $500 each. The awardees, whose names are listed here have been notified of their selection and the most efficient means to transfer the funds is being established with each recipient. The first $4,500 has been transferred directly to nine awardees or their designated couriers with less than 2% loss due to bank or exchange charges. Several recipients have requested transfer of funds to couriers who will be attending the XVI IUCr meeting in Beijing.

A new campaign is being launched to raise an additional $15,000 from crystallographers in order to meet the $25,000 challenge presented by the generous donation from the Sloan Foundation. To qualify for matching funds, donations must come from individual crystallographers, and not from corporate donations. Please consider making a donation to the ACA/USNCCr Fund in order that this challenge can be met. Contributions to the fund should be made to ACA/USNCCr Fund to Assist FSU Crystallographers and sent to ACA Headquarters, PO Box 96, Ellicott Station, Buffalo, NY 14205-0096, USA. Donations may be charged to a Mastercard or Visa credit card. Additional application for support from FSU crystallographers should be sent by mail to the ACA Headquarters or by FAX (716-852-4846) or e-mail (pletnev%mfb@ubvms.cc.buffalo.edu).

Russian Association for Powder Crystallography

An All Russian non-profit Association for Powder Crystallography (RAPC) has been established by the Russian Union of Crystallographers. With the sponsorship of the Russian Academy of Sciences the RAPC will stimulate fresh ideas and accelerate progress in the field of powder crystallography. An organizational conference attended by 121 representatives of over 30 Russian research institutes and universities, elected the following officers: V. Sh. Shehtman (Inst. of Solid State Physics, Chernogolovka) - President; D. Heiker (Inst. Crystal., Moscow) and V. Dritz (Geol. Inst., Moscow) - Vice Presidents; and S. Ivanov (Karpov Inst. of Phys. Chem., Moscow) - General Secretary. A board comprised of 21 Russian authorities in the field of powder diffraction hope to enhance international cooperative programs with ICDD, NIST, IUCr, and the CPD.
