On 20 January 2009 an MOU was signed between RIKEN SPring-8 Center (Japan) and the University of Liverpool (UK). In December Acta Cryst. F published the first fruits of this collaboration, which is extended to include the RIKEN Systems and Structural Biology Center: eight crystal structures from four organisms. A common themein these structures was the presence at active sites of co-factors, substrate and product molecules, such as NAD+, NADP+, lactate, pyruvate and pyridoxal 5'-phosphate, all of which were endogenous to the protein expression systems.
