Short-range order diffuse scattering in quasicrystals

Acta Cryst. (2010). A66, 372–383 (doi.org/10.1107/S0108767310004885)

[Phason flip] The diffuse scattering intensity of the phason flip in the Penrose pattern, which is calculated by the application of a derived diffuse scattering intensity formula.

The short-range order diffuse scattering often observed in alloys is also observed in quasicrystals. A newly proposed theory enables us to analyze short-range order atom or atom cluster fluctuations in quasicrystals. The theory uses a higher-dimensional description of quasicrystals. The intensity formula is, however, quite similar to that for conventional crystals and provides a method of determining the short-range order parameters or so-called α parameters for quasicrystals.
