IUCr news digest May 5 - May 9, 2014
During the recent IUCr-UNESCO South Asia Summit Meeting on Vistas in Structural Chemistry, a historic moment was witnessed when over 50 leading scientists signed a general appeal to the IUCr to help in initiating actions to promote regional scientific collaboration including (but not limited to) joint holding of training workshops, video-based lecturing, encouraging mobility of researchers, promoting joint research projects and facilitating regional conferences on the subject of X-ray diffraction and its applications in the South Asian and South East Asian regions.

Dr Michele Zema, project manager for the International Year of Crystallography presented a lecture on behalf of the IUCr at the XII Edition School of Neutron Scattering "Francesco Paolo Ricci", Erice, Italy (April 30-May 9). The presentation gives an excellent overview of the rich history of the IUCr and its many activities, from journal and book publications and databases through to conferences and the triennial IUCr Congress, taking place this year in Montreal, Canada.

The course requires just 3 hours of your time a week and provides a basic introduction or refresher to crystallography. You can find a lot of supplementary reading material and support on the IUCr education pages. Here you'll find a plethora of useful links to places such as our free online dictionary of crystallography and over 20 teaching pamphlets, which provide useful introductions to different aspects of symmetry, diffraction techniques, structural science and crystallography.
