Remembering Röntgen

Dear Bill,

I enclose two photographs that you may find a use for in the IUCr Newsletter. The one, dating from August 1995, shows Max Dobler (ETH, Zurich) and myself about to ascend the "Rontgen-Weg" or Roentgen Way, in Pontresina, Switzerland, to pay our respects to the plaque commemorating his great discovery (photo #2). The  plaque was installed by a body known as the Deutsche Rontgen Gesellschaft, sometime earlier in the century. I don't know if the Gesellschaft still exists, perhaps someone among your readers may know.

Pontresina, close by S. Moritz, was a favorite summer haunt of WR, as it is of mine. The plaque is on the mountainside just south of town and is accessible by climbing a giant granite stepway. Max and I actually took a chair lift up the mountain and walked down (but the other is a better story!). On the centenary, the town added a small billboard at the site, pointing out the anniversary.

Dear Robert,

As there was only room for one photo, we thought the plaque would have greater reader appeal. If we get enough requests, we will (or will not) run the photo of you and Max in the next issue, depending upon the nature of the requests.
