Order–disorder transition in monoclinic sulfur: a precise structural study by high-resolution neutron powder diffraction

Acta Cryst. (2006). B62, 953-959 [doi:10.1107/S0108768106039309]

[Sulfur packing]The crystal packing of monoclinic sulfur viewed along the b axis, showing the two ordered and one disordered S8 molecules in the asymmetric unit.
Sulfur is one of the few elements that possess multiple allotropes and associated structural phase transitions. This paper characterizes the order–disorder phase transition in the monoclinic (β form) of octo-sulfur using neutron powder diffraction and also highlights problems encountered as a consequence of the low thermal conductivity of the sample when adopting rapid data collection strategies.
