Tom Blundell knighted

Sir Tom Blundell was knighted in January of this year by Queen Elizabeth of England.

Commander of the British Empire

The title of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) was conferred upon Judith Howard by the Queen of England at ceremonies at Buckingham Palace in October 1996. Judith is the Program Chair for the XVIlI Congress and General Assembly in Glasgow 1999.

American Crystallographic Association Awards

The 1997 Warren Award will be presented to David Long Price for his work published during the 1990's on the structure and dynamics of liquids and glasses.

Carroll Johnson has been named the recipient of the 1997 Buerger Award in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the field of thermal motion analysis, now universally used in the crystallographic and chemical literature.

The 1997 Patterson Award will be presented to Christer Nordman for his work on structure determinacion by utilization of the Patterson function. He has shown that searches can be effectively conducted in Patterson space.

Protein Society Awards

The Dupont Merck Young Investigator Award for 1997 went to John Kuriyan (Rockefeller U.) for his theoretical and experimental contributions to the understanding of protein structure and dynamics with special reference to DNA replication.

The Christian B. Anfinsen Award, sponsored by Aviv Instruments, Inc. was awarded to Wayne Hendrickson (Columbia U.) in recognition of his development of X-ray anomalous scattering methods for structure determination.

American Chemical Society Awards

Jack Dunitz and Jon C. Clardy have received Arthur C. Cope Scholar Awards. Dunitz and his colleagues developed the method of deriving from the structures model pathways for prototypic chemical reactions.

Clardy has determined  crystallographic structures of natural products bound to their biological target molecules. His recent investigations involve how FK506 and rapamycin transmit their signals from the outside of human cells to the nucleus.

FICCI Award

M. Vijayan received the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) Award from the Prime Minister of India for his outstanding contributions pertaining to the structure, interactions and transformations of proteins and their constituents and the development of structural biology in India. He was a founding member of the IUCr Commission on Small Molecules and has chaired the Commission on Biological Macromolecules.

Turnball Award

Robert E. Newnham (Pennsylvania State U.) received the Turnball Lecturer award at the Materials Research Society meeting in Boston, in December of 1996. The award honors Newnham for "pioneering the field of ceramic composites for electronic and optical applications" and for his "leadership in establishing the broader discipline of materials science and engineering".

USNAS

Carolyn Cohen (Brandeis U.) has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Science.

Fellows of AAAS

Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science: Helen M. Berman, Rutgers U., Boris W. Batterman, Cornell U.
