Training in Remote Crystallography Strengthens Skills and Supports African Collaboration
Dr Nessreen Abdelfatah Ali Abdoun recently completed the UNESCO–UNESRALE training programme, Remote Access to a Single-Crystal X-ray Diffractometer for African Scientists, hosted at the University of Lorraine, Nancy, France (1–26 September 2025).
Despite significant personal challenges due to the conflict in Sudan, Dr Abdoun describes the programme as a transformative experience. She gained hands-on training in remote instrument operation, data collection and structural refinement, leading to the successful analysis of four samples and the development of a new research proposal.
The course not only strengthened her own research capabilities but also reinforced her commitment to building crystallographic capacity in Sudan. Collaboration with fellow participants from Burundi, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Togo provided valuable insights into AFRAMED’s support and training initiatives.
Dr Abdoun extends her gratitude to UNESCO, the IUCr, CNRS and the University of Lorraine for enabling this opportunity.
