Asian School on Crystallographic Computing

The school was organized jointly by the IUCr Computing and Teaching Commissions as a satellite meeting of the Asian Crystallographic Assn in Bangkok in Nov. 1995. The school included morning lecturers and practical sessions in the afternoons. Lectures covered crystallographic computing (data treatment, Patterson and Fourier, direct methods, refinement and interpretation of results) with introductions of advanced topics (macromolecular crystallography, powder data, analysis of thermal motion and charge densiyy studies). The practical sessions covered operating systems and programming languages, crystallographic files for data exchange and publication submission, the use of crystallographic databases, and some basic concepts on computer graphics and networks. Handouts with lecture notes were distributed to the participants. The lecturers included P. Coppens, G. R. Desiraju, F. Hai-Fu, C. M. Gramaccioli, S. Hall, C. Kennard, P. Phavanantha, M. Ramanadham, W. T. Robinson, J. Simpson, B. Skelton, H. Toraya, D. Viterbo and T. Yamane. Organizational aspects were coordinated by A. Ungkitchanukit. The practical sessions helped to establish a friendly climate which stimulated people to discuss their problems. The school was made possible by the financial support of the IUCr and the Crystallographic Soc. of Japan, the enthusiasm of the Bangkok LOC, the dedication of Dr Ungkitchanukit, the work of all the lecturers, the enthusiasm of the participants, the warm hospitality of Chulalongkorn University and the friendliness of our Thai hosts.
