18th IUCr Congress and General Assembly

Time marches on, and the 18th IUCr Congress in Glasgow Aug. 4-13, 1999, gets ever closer. Crystallographers may like to be kept up to date with recent developments.

The web page is now fully operational and changed on a fairly regular basis. The URL is: http://www.chem.gla.ac.uk/iucr99/. There is also an e-mail address for any suggestions or points you wish to raise with the organizers: iucr99@chem.gla.ac.uk. The first announcement will be ready for the Lisbon ECM-17 meeting in August, and this will be followed by the second announcement in the summer of 1998. Abstracts will be due by February 1999 and registrations by June 1999. Registrations, abstract submission, etc. should all be available via the internet.

The social program for the excursion day includes the possibilities of a geological tour, Loch Lomond cruise, the isle of Arran, Glencoe, Burns county, the Edinburgh festival and evening events that span whisky tasting, Stirling Castle, a shopping evening, a civic reception, a conference ceilidh (a sort of eat and drink and sing and dance event), and a learn to dance evening for those who want to try their hand at Scottish dancing for the ceilidh itself.

J. Howard is the Program Chair and welcomes all input concerning the scientific program. She can be contacted by e-mail at: J.A.K.Howard@durham.ac.uk.

Satellites arranged so far:

  • Synchrotron Radiation at Chester College (B. Cernick, organizer),
  • Structural and Dynamic Aspects of Molecular and Ionic Solids using Neutrons at Oxford (C. Carlisle, organizer),
  • The Cambridge Structural Database at Cambridge (F. Allen, Organizer),
  • A Computing School also at Cambridge.

We are planning a set of workshops on the first day, in the afternoon, before the opening ceremony. Do you want to organize one? We take care of registrations, food, etc. all you do is organize the workshop itself. C. Wilson and K. Shankland at the Rutherford Lab are the people to approach with suggestions. They can be contacted by e-mail at: c.c.wilson@rl.ac.uk or k.shankland@rl.ac.uk.

Finally, and at great expense, we are organizing an eclipse of the sun on the 11th of August. We could only afford an 80% eclipse, but it will be spectacular, and all lectures will cease so that it can be watched at around 10:15 am. What better reason could you have for coming to Glasgow in 1999?
