Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre Appointments

The Board of Governors of the CCDC has made two key appointments to secure the future development of the Centre from May 1, 1997, in succession to O. Kennard, OBE FRS. As the new Executive Director, D. Hartley will have responsibility for the overall management of the Centre, and will contribute considerable expertise to the development of the informatics infrastructure of the CCDC. Dr Hartley was Director of the U. of Cambridge Computing Service from 1970-1994. Since then, he has been Chief Executive of the UK Education and research Networking Association (UKERNA), which is responsible for the development of the JANET and superJANET networks. Dr Hartley has a research track record in information systems development, experience of management in university and public sectors, and has advised academia and Government over many years.

The Board. with the approval of the new Executive Director, has appointed F. Allen as Scientific Director of the CCDC. Dr Allen will be responsible to the Executive Director for the scientific strategy of the Centre within policy guidelines approved by the Board, and directly to the Board for the provision of scientific issues. Dr Allen joined the CCDC in 1970 and was appointed Deputy Director in 1992. He is well known for his contributions to the development of the CSD System and for his research work in structure correlation and chemical information science. Dr Allen is a member of the IUCr Committee on Crystallographic Databases, Editor of Section B of the IUCr Journal Acta Crystallographica, and Vice-President elect of the British Crystallographic Association.
